Press Release November 10, 2005 - After the Storm: Resurrecting the Soul of a Garden
Wind, rain, flooding, devastation - New Orleans is home to the resurrection fern (Polypodium polypodioides), a plant that only unfurls following rain to remind residents that hope always flourishes in this historic city - our Venice of North America. Empathy for the suffering this city has recently endured inspired the Oregon Chapter of The Association of Professional Landscape Designers (APLD®) to design and create an authentic French Quarter walled courtyard garden.
The French Quarter's unique architecture results from an early history of devastating fires that compelled residents to build masonry and stucco structures with shared walls and to live in confined quarters. Thus, in earlier times, serving as both a work area and a place for privacy, the courtyard garden often became the heart and soul of the French Quarter house. The APLD® Resurrection Garden reflects the intimate relationship of the French Quarter walled courtyard garden to the history, climate and social surroundings of New Orleans. Be dazzled by this living jewel adorned with the vertical and romantic accents for which these small, languid gardens are fondly remembered: wrought iron gates, sensuous pergola, cooing doves, tropical urns, soothing fountain, Romanesque statues, flickering candlelight, romance, music, and mystery!
This year, the Oregon Chapter of APLD® introduces a unique addition to its display garden - an entertaining and educational stroll along Design Boulevard. Understand and appreciate the benefits and advantages of hiring an APLD® landscape designer to plan your next landscape, view the tools landscape designers use to create the perfect landscape, and be among the first to see the latest landscape and garden products and ornaments. After viewing Design Boulevard and the Resurrection Garden, you will pass through the APLD® booth, fashioned and decorated after a French Quarter sitting parlor, where any questions you have can be fully answered by APLD® landscape designers. If there is a new landscape in your future, you will be able to make an appointment to meet with a designer to discuss your landscape needs. Most importantly, visitors will have opportunities to contribute to New Orleans' relief efforts. 100% of all donations APLD® receives during the show will go directly to The New Orleans Botanical Society for the renovation and rebuilding of the gardens of New Orleans. We hope you will decide to contribute to this cause!
The destruction of New Orleans from hurricanes Katrina and Rita altered the city, its people, and its environs forever. But like its resilient people and culture, New Orleans gardens will again resurrect themselves as the verdant and peaceful havens they have been for hundreds of years. Thank you for visiting our display and supporting our relief efforts.
